Part 36 Mining

Section 605 Carbon monoxide monitors

Fire is a real threat associated with conveyor operations in a mine. In coal mines, the threat is increased due to the possibility of a methane gas/coal dust explosion. The presence of carbon monoxide indicates a heating process resulting either from spontaneous combustion or other heating process. Based on the content of carbon monoxide in the air, the state of the fire or heating can be predicted.

The location and frequency of monitoring installations depends on variables such as the length of the gallery, the nature and quality of the coal being mined, and the velocity of ventilation air.
