Notice of group termination

If an employer intends to terminate the employment of 50 or more employees at a single location within a four-week period, the employer must – by law – give the Minister four weeks’ written notice of intention to do so. The notice must specify the number of employees whose employment will be terminated and the effective date of the terminations.

This notice provides the Government of Alberta with important labour market information and enables it to mobilize workforce supports, including applying for Employment Insurance, updating resumes, conducting job searches and exploring retraining possibilities.

This requirement does not apply to seasonal labourers or to anyone employed for a definite term or task.

Employers subject to this requirement must complete and submit a form providing the Notice to Minister of Group Terminations.

Upon receiving the notice, Employment Standards will provide an employer with written acknowledgement of the notice.
