Adolescents and Young Persons

Module 9 provides an overview of the regulations surrounding the employment of adolescents and young people in the province of Alberta. In general, the Employment Standards Code places restrictions on the employment of people under the age of 18. The rules differ depending on the age of the individual and address if, when, and where the individual can be employed. Topics discussed include:

  • Adolescents — 12, 13 and 14 year olds
  • Jobs that can, and cannot, be performed by adolescents
  • Hours of work restrictions for adolescents
  • Young persons — 15, 16 and 17 year olds
  • Hours of work restriction for young persons
  • Requirements for supervision
  • Permits
  • Ensuring a safe work environment

It is important to remember that the minimum standards under the Employment Standards legislation apply to all employees that fall under Alberta’s jurisdiction, which includes adolescents and young people.
